Mel and Mal's Onion Gravy

  • 50 ml olive oil
  • 2 large onions
  • 2 Knor rich beef stock
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 2 tsp cornflour, mixed with a little cold water
  • 200 ml boiling water from the kettle.
  • A knob of butter
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Add taste and texture to any meal with this delicious gravy.

Serves : 6        Prep/Cooking Time : 30 minutes

Tip : Slice the onions as fine as possible, with a mandolin if you have one as this gives you fine even onions and helps to release the flavour into the gravy.


Heat the oil in a large fry pan until hot, then add the onions and garlic and on a very low heat, cook the onions for around 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelised and golden brown in colour.

Add the boiling water, Knorr beef stock and cornflour and bring to the boil, stirring continuously.

Reduce to a low simmer and continue to simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the knob of butter (this gives it a "shine") and stir into the gravy until melted, then adjust the seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.
