Mel and Mal's Homemade Beef Burger in a Bun

  • For the Burgers:
  • 3 slices of white bread
  • 500g Best quality Beef Mince
  • 1 large white onion, quartered
  • 2 garlic cloves, skinned
  • 1tsp cumin seeds, crushed in a pestle & mortar
  • 1tsp mixed dry herbs
  • 2tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 egg
  • Salt & ground black pepper to taste
  • A little olive oil to brush the burgers before cooking
  • For the Topping
  • 6 burger buns
  • 6 slices of cheddar cheese
  • A handful of rocket leaves
  • 2 large beef tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 large white or red onion, sliced thinly
  • Olive oil
  • Tomato ketchup
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

These are just yummy at any time and a tea time favourite in our house.

The beauty of a burger is that you can be as reserved or as mad as you like with the toppings - go for it and raid the pantry!

Serves : 6        Prep/Cooking Time : 45 mins


Prepare the Burger

Using a food processor, first zap the bread to make breadcrumbs and reserve.

Place all the other ingredients for the burger into the food processor and zap until well mixed together.

Add the breadcrumbs and zap again

Take the mixture out of the processor and make into 6 large balls and using the palm of your hand, flatten out to 1" thickness. Allow to rest for 15 minutes.

Cook the Burgers

Heat a hot griddle pan until hot, brush the burgers with a little olive oil on both sides and place into the griddle pan and cook until golden brown for around 10 mins.

Turn over and cook for a further 10 minutes until cooked through and golden brown.

Assemble and Enjoy!

When ready to serve, place a slice of toast on the plate, place the burger on top of the toast, followed by 2 slices of cheese, tomato, a ring of onion, a dollop of ketchup, then place a second piece of toast on the top and push a wooden skewer through the middle to hold it all together

Place the rocket on the top, then drizzle some olive oil on top of the rocket,
Serve with chunky chips and season to taste
