  • 100g cold butter, cubed
  • 100g golden caster sugar
  • 2tsp baking powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 25g milk
  • 150g glace cherries or if in season ripe cherries, chopped
  • Egg wash for glazing
  • Caster sugar for dusting

A firm favourite for both kids and adults, takes you back to when Grandma used to bake!

Get the kids involved in making these, they love a bit of mixing and getting their hands into the sticky mixture. This one is always popular when I am doing the Kids Cookery Workshops at Bentalls in Kingston every school holiday period.

Serves : 12        Prep/Cooking Time : 45 mins

Tip : These freeze beautifully so if you want to batch bake, simply pop them into a Lock and Lock container with a sheet of baking parchment in between each layer of cakes. This way, when unexpected guests come to tea, you will have your homemade buns ready to produce!

Make the cake mixture

Preheat the oven to 190C

In a large mixing bowl sift the flour, salt and baking powder

Add the butter and using your fingertips rub the butter into the flour mixture until it looks like breadcrumbs

Add the chopped cherries and the sugar and blend in

In a separate bowl, add the egg and the milk and whisk together

Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and mix together using a wooden spoon until the mixture forms stiff dough

Divide the dough and bake

Divide the dough into 10 small balls and place on a large baking sheet, lightly oiled

Flatten the balls slightly, using the back of a spoon

Brush each bun with some melted butter

Sprinkle on some caster sugar

Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown
